Most Comfortable Mattresses of 2024 – Expert-Tested

What makes a mattress comfortable? For some people it’s the initial feel of the bed—a certain plushness when you lie down, or the way the surface supports your body. For others it might be more of a mental experience, with the mattress representing a place of peace and rest.

Given all the different standards of comfort, there’s no way to objectively identify the most comfortable mattress in the world. But I like to think we’ve given it a pretty good shot! After loads of in-person testing, we’ve built the below list of the coziest mattresses we’ve ever experienced.

How Did We Pick the Most Comfortable Mattresses?

Because everyone’s experience of comfort is personal, there’s no objective way to measure it. However, we can draw some conclusions from our testing that point to a high chance of comfort for the average sleeper.

We judged and chose the mattresses on this list according to the criteria below—click on each one to expand it.

A Cozy Balance of Support and Pressure Relief

Both support and pressure relief need to be present in a mattress for it to be a comfortable, durable choice.

Support refers to how well the bed keeps you lifted and encourages a neutral, natural spine, whereas pressure relief refers to how well the bed takes pressure and strain off of key areas.

A bed with an imbalance of these two factors will probably feel uncomfortable over time. Too much pressure relief may cause you to sink into the bed too deeply, whereas too much support can make a mattress feel quite hard and unyielding.

Every bed below received at least a 4 out of 5 in both the support and pressure relief categories following our testing.

Comfort Across Sleeping Positions

When we test a mattress, we try to have people with different body types lie on top of it in each of the three major sleeping positions: side, back, and stomach.

Comfortable mattresses are often versatile mattresses. They’ll feel soothing in a variety of positions and to a variety of people. So, for this roundup, we only selected beds that felt comfortable to our testers in at least 2 out of 3 sleeping positions.

Memorable Notes from Our Testers

We test a lot of mattresses here at Sleep Advisor, so we have to be quite detailed with our feedback. Our notes track the performance categories that each bed excels at, as well as the ones in which it falls short.

For this list, we focused on beds that had lots of positive testing notes about their overall feel and comfort level. We tried to pick out memorable quotes that showcase just how cozy our testers felt while trying them out.

Why It Earned Most Comfortable Mattress Overall

Our testing proved that the Helix Midnight is in a league of its own. It has lovely pressure relief (5 out of 5), reliable support (5 out of 5), and—in a stunning twist for a hybrid—awesome motion isolation (yet another 5 out of 5).

This impressive performance is all the more notable given the Midnight’s price. Some of us actually prefer this affordable core model to its pricier upgraded versions! We felt best on our sides and backs on this bed, which makes sense, as it’s marketed for side sleeping.

Helix Midnight back sleeper angle

Testing Studio Soundbite

“I enjoyed the contouring and support under my lower back. The foam layers made me feel cozy while the innersprings did their thing in supporting me.”

Sosha Lewis, Senior Staff Writer

Our Favorite Comfort Layer

Memory Plus Foam. That “plus” signals that this memory foam is a special type unique to the Helix brand. It’s nice and soft when you first lie down, but it doesn’t sink too much. Instead, it gives the bed a medium-firm feel with the perfect amount of cushion up top.

What Else Is Inside the Helix Midnight?

The Helix Midnight has six total layers and stands 11.5 inches tall.

  • Layer 1 – Top Cover. A stretchy soft cover.
  • Layer 2 – Memory Plus Foam. A cradling foam with a medium-firm feel.
  • Layers 3 & 4 – Helix Responsive Foam. Two layers of springy, supportive foam.
  • Layer 5 – Coils. Individually wrapped springs that are reinforced on the long edges of the bed.
  • Layer 6 – DuraDense Foam. A thick base layer.

Pros
Extraordinary balance – Spinal alignment and pressure relief come together in near-perfect harmony on this bed.
It absorbs motion – Our seismograph readings were surprisingly flat.
Cons
Lackluster edges – The reinforced sides dipped easily when we lied and sat on them.
Stomach sleepers are left out – Results in this position were mixed, and some testers felt their hips dip too low.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight Luxe

The Helix Midnight has over 6,500 reviews on Helix’s website, averaging a score of 4.5 out of 5

On Reddit, users such as u/alexapharm praised the bed’s feel and durability, saying that their “hips and back have been WAY happier since we bought it a couple of years ago.”

Others, such as u/Jovden, found it too plush or prone to sagging over time: “while it was definitely a luxury bed it was definitely not for me. It was way too soft and I sunk into the mattress a lot more than I wanted to.”

Why It Earned Most Comfortable Hybrid Mattress

The WinkBed is a model for what a high-quality hybrid mattress should look and feel like. We loved how bouncy it was, which made it easy to switch between positions during testing. For Loren and I, this mattress also felt cozy in all three sleeping positions.

Our heavyweight tester, Spencer, wanted a little more support while on his stomach. But luckily, the WinkBed comes in four different firmnesses—including a “Plus” variant for plus-sized folks.

WinkBed mattress in Sleep Advisor's testing studio
The WinkBed in our studio.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“Bouncy, supportive, and cushy from the pillow top. It feels like a luxury hotel bed.”

Loren Bullock, Former Lead Product Tester

Our Favorite Comfort Layer

Euro Pillow Top. This is the layer that changes its feel depending on what firmness you select. We tested the Luxury Firm model, and the pillow top was a welcome sheet of plushness on top of the palpable support underneath.

What Else Is Inside the WinkBed?

The WinkBed is available in Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm, and Plus models. The bed is 13.5 inches tall.

    • Tencel™ Cover – A soft and moisture-wicking cover made from  sustainably spun fibers.

    • Euro Pillow Top – The pillow top features gel-infused foam to cushion your body without holding onto excess heat.

    • Additional Foam Layers – A series of specialized foams between the pillow top and coil layer provide comfort and support.

    • Coils – These springs are organized into multiple zones that balance lift and give for healthy spinal alignment.

Pros
Multiple firmnesses – With this level of customization, you can tailor this mattress to fit your comfort needs.
Durable – The springs inside are vigorously tested to ensure they can withstand long-term use.
Cons
Not for foam fans – If you need a cradling hug on top, it might be best to look elsewhere.
Some motion carries – Thanks to its bounce, you’re probably going to feel movements from across the bed.

Customer Reviews of the WinkBed

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars.

One user (who has since deleted their account) on the r/Mattress subreddit gave a prolonged review over 115 days of owning the bed, concluding that it “holds up well, my dog and I love it.”

Another user (u/anonmeplox) ended up feeling like the Luxury Firm was too firm, and the Soft was too soft, but their returns went smoothly: “The company itself was wonderful to work with.”

Why It Earned Most Comfortable Memory Foam Mattress

The Nectar is an all-foam bed that pairs contouring plushness with a strong foundation. The softer layers on top cradled our joints, while the denser, firmer foam at the base kept our bodies lifted and properly aligned on our backs and sides.

This combination creates the iconic comfy “hugging” feel of memory foam without sacrificing spinal alignment. We return to the Nectar again and again when asked to recommend a comfortable foam bed, though we caution plus-size folks and stomach sleepers that they may need more support.

The foam layers inside the Nectar mattress
The foam layers inside the Nectar mattress.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“My joints feel plenty of support and lack of any pressure build-up … Good spine support and the memory foam contours easily to the body.”

Julia Forbes, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Our Favorite Comfort Layer

Therapeutic Memory Foam. This uppermost comfort layer surrounded our pressure points with slow-sinking softness. It’s a classic material for a reason, and the Nectar makes great use of it.

What Else Is Inside the Nectar?

The Nectar is 12 inches high and has four layers, including a top cover.

  • Layer 1 – Top Cover. A breathable cover made with polyethylene fibers to mitigate heat buildup.
  • Layer 2 – Therapeutic Memory Foam (1 inches). This memory foam works to relieve pressure buildup and cushion your body.
  • Layer 3 – Dynamic Response Foam (3 inches). This bouncy foam layer promotes proper spine alignment and absorbs motion.
  • Layer 4 – ActiveSupport Foam (8 inches). A dense, durable foundation layer.
Pros
Affordable – Frequent sales can bring the price of a queen down to less than $700.
Pressure relief star – The foams eased tension around our hips, shoulders, and back.
Cons
Could overheat – This bed is more likely to trap heat than a hybrid or dedicated cooling mattress.
Too soft for some sleepers – Heavier and stomach sleepers will need more lift.

Customer Reviews of the Nectar

With thousands of reviews on Nectar’s website, the Nectar mattress has an average 4.8 out of 5 stars.

On Reddit, positive user experiences stress how comfortable the Nectar’s foam feels. “[T]he mattress is spectacular,” said u/tawdryuprising. “I literally just ordered one today for my new apartment! It was worth texting my ex and asking which mattress we had shared together.”

Negative experiences tend to focus on heat retention and the bed’s foams, which, for some, sink too deeply or don’t feel as soft or firm as they expected. “Once your in position, you’re stuck,” said u/iceeze.

Why It Earned Most Comfortable Mattress for Couples

The Evolution is Nolah’s answer to the luxury hotel bed, and it certainly lives up to expectations. This bed has a plush top and a medium-firm feel that’s sure to cater to a variety of sleeping positions. If you and your partner are looking for a comfy bed to compromise on, this might be the one.

The pillow top offers an impressive balance of motion isolation and bounce, so you can move around with ease and without disturbing your partner. It’s also got some cooling capability and relieves pressure like a champ. It’s a favorite in our studio, and it’s hard to go wrong with his bed.

Nolah Evolution couples testing
Testing the Nolah Evolution side by side.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“Although I love my husband with my whole heart and soul, sleeping with him is akin to sleeping with a wounded marlin who desperately tries not to be reeled onto the boat. He flips and flops like a tilt-a-whirl at a county carnival. The Evolution does a great job of absorbing his motion.”

Sosha Lewis, Senior Staff Writer

Our Favorite Comfort Layer

Euro Top. The top of the mattress is what you’ll feel first when you plop down on your new bed, and the Nolah Evolution’s Euro Top provides cushy comfort right at the surface. Not only is it going to melt away pressure buildup, it’s got a gusset around the edges to let out any pesky excess heat.

What Else Is Inside the Nolah Evolution?

The Nolah Evolution mattress is a whopping 15 inches tall with eight layers. It comes in Plush, Luxury Firm, or Firm models.

    • Layer 1 – Top Cover. The cover is made of a blend of organic cotton and cooling ArcticTex™ technology.

    • Layer 2 – Euro Topper (2 inches). The Euro top is quilted with breathable, cushiony foam and features a gusset around the sides to allow excess heat to escape.

    • Layer 3 – AirFoamICE™ (2 inches). A layer of graphite-infused proprietary foam relieves pressure while staying cool.

    • Layer 4 – High-Resilience Foam (2 inches). This foam layer bolsters support.

    • Layer 5 – High-Density Transition Foam (1 inch). This dense foam layer mimics the bouncy properties of latex foam, but Nolah claims it’s even more durable.

    • Layer 6 – Coils (8 inches). The innerspring unit features three zones of coils to ensure your body stays in a comfortable, supported posture.

    • Layer 7 – Recycled Plant Fiber Foundation. A stable, eco-friendly foundation.

    • Layer 8 – Lower Cover. The bottom cover has handles for easy transportation as well as a non-slip bottom to keep the mattress from shifting.

Pros
Soft and springy – We were impressed to find out that the cushy Nolah Evolution maintains its bouncy feel.
Strong edges – Testers could sit or lay near the perimeter of the bed without much sinkage.
Cons
High price –. A queen, before sales and coupons, will cost you around $2,500.
Big and bulky – The Nolah Evolution was a bit difficult to move around the studio, even with the built-in handles.

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Evolution

Earning a 4.9 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website, the Nolah Evolution seems to be a hit.

In an in-depth review of the bed on the r/Mattress subreddit, one user (u/cyriouslyslick) said, “At my size [350 lbs, 6’ tall] I find it very plush, but still supportive.”

Other users, however, have reported sagging after long term use. As one user (u/bamagrad03) candidly put it, “Edge support is meh.”

Why It Earned Most Comfortable Cooling Mattress

For hot sleepers, a comfortable mattress might mean one that stops you from overheating. Well, say goodbye to sweaty nights with the Bear Elite Hybrid. This hybrid mattress boasts a temperature-sensitive construction, featuring a cooling cover, gel-infused foams, and individually wrapped coils to keep the heat out and air flowing through the mattress.

It’s also comfy to sleep on, too. We dubbed it “buoyant and cloudlike.” That means there’ll be a mix of sumptuous sink and some bounce, if you switch between sleeping positions or just want to jump on your bed.

Bear Elite Hybrid mattress image

Testing Studio Soundbite

“And lastly, this bed is pretty cooling. As we did our temperature test using the temp gun. We didn’t really see a lot of heat buildup as we were lying on the mattress.”

Loren Bullock, Former Lead Product Tester

Our Favorite Comfort Layer

Copper-Infused Memory Foam. Memory foam provides plush pressure relief, but the added bonus of infused copper keeps it from retaining too much heat. Copper also has some natural anti-bacterial properties.

What Else Is Inside the Bear Elite Hybrid?

The Bear Elite Hybrid is 14 inches tall. It comes in Soft, Medium, and Firm models.

    • Layer 1 – Cover. A combination of Phase Change Material (PCM) and performance-enhancing Celliant® fibers keep the bed cool. The latter absorbs excess heat to convert into infrared energy, which should then reportedly promote muscle recovery.

    • Layer 2 – Copper-Infused Memory Foam. Copper is infused into this pressure-relieving memory foam layer for extra cooling and natural protection from viruses and bacteria.

    • Layer 3 – Dynamic Transition Foam. This contouring foam allows for a comfortable sink into the mattress while keeping you from going too far into the coil unit below.

    • Layer 4 – Coils. Individually wrapped coils are zoned to provide support in the center for your lower back, while allowing for give around the hips and shoulders.

    • Layer 5 – High-Density Support Foam. A sturdy foam foundation for the mattress.

Pros
Cooling technology –. The cover, cooling gel foam, and coils should help sleepers remain cool throughout the night.
Strong edges – As my fellow tester Stuart noticed during testing, “you can really take advantage of the entire surface of the bed.”
Cons
Not a budget buy – Though worth every penny, a queen will run you just over $2,300.
Too plush for some – Some stomach sleepers or heavier folks may need a bed that’s a bit firmer to support them.

Customer Reviews of the Bear Elite Hybrid

According to Bear’s website, where the Bear Elite Hybrid has over 3,700 reviews, the mattress scores 4.6 out of 5 stars.

On r/Mattress, users praise the bed’s ability to support. Even a user who ultimately decided to return the bed (u/Fun-Map-9705) stated, “I felt proper spinal alignment in all sleeping positions. No pain or achiness upon waking.”

But another user (u/mexidorian) warned, “This mattress softens up significantly just past the trial where they allow a refund.”

Why It Earned Most Comfortable Mattress for Back Pain

The Saatva Classic has a long list of features are meant to pamper your spine specifically. The low back gets special attention from zoned quilting in the cover, a “lumbar crown” foam strip, and a wire that braces the innerspring units. (Yes, there’s two!)

In the testing studio, we were unanimous on how comfortable and buoying this mattress felt across all three sleep positions. It’s so well-rounded that it held up our midsections no matter which way we turned.

Saatva Mattress Side view in Sleep Advisor's testing studio.
The Saatva Classic, ready for testing.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“There’s good cushion, I can feel the supportive layers and coils below holding the body up. My lower back feels good, my pressure points are softly supported.”

Loren Bullock, Former Lead Product Tester

Our Favorite Comfort Layer

Lumbar Crown. This narrow strip of foam stretches across the area where your lower back should rest on the mattress. It’s a small layer, but it has a big impact: I could feel it giving my low back a boost, especially while on my side and stomach.

What Else Is Inside the Saatva Classic?

The Saatva Classic comes in three firmnesses: Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. You can also pick between 11.5-inch or 14.5-inch height options.

    • Euro Pillow Top. The pillow top of the mattress is made with pressure-relieving quilted foam, while the organic cotton cover is protected by an exclusive Guardin® botanical antimicrobial treatment to keep away bacteria and mold.

    • Lumbar Crown. A crest of foam near the top of the mattress is designed to provide specialized support and pressure relief to the lower back.

    • First Coil Layer. The first innerspring unit features individually pocketed coils that are zoned to provide targeted lift and give.

    • Spinal Wire. A bracing wire located within the two coil units promotes proper alignment.

    • Second Coil Layer. The second coil layer is a more traditional innerspring unit with interconnected coils to increase the bed’s durability.

    • Perimeter Foam Rails. The entire bed is framed by memory foam rails that prevent the edges from sagging, allowing you to sleep near the edge of the bed.

Pros
Customizability – It comes in three firmnesses and two heights, so it’s easy to “build” your ideal match.
Free white glove delivery – A team of professionals will deliver and set up your new mattress.
Cons
Returns cost extra – Returning your mattress will run you $99.
Could absorb motion better – The coils inhibit the bed’s ability to cancel out movement at the surface.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website.

On Reddit, many users seem to love the convenience of the brand’s white glove delivery service and the customization options for this bed. Negative feedback usually centers around failing to find a model that felt firm or soft enough for the buyer’s tastes.

Some folks also noticed that its motion isolation could be better, but as u/cyberwizkiddo123 put it, “If you sleep soundly then I highly recommend it as I love how luxurious and comfortable it is.”

Why It Earned Most Comfortable Mattress for Side Sleepers

On our sides, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid felt heavenly.

This was a little surprising, given that we were testing the “Medium” model (the option between Soft and Firm). But we all agreed that it felt soft and cushy, around a 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

Even as it cradled our hips and shoulders, though, its spring unit and responsive foams kept us feeling lifted and lightweight. This is a choice hybrid for anyone who wants some plushness paired with their support.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid lightweight side sleeper testing
Testing the Signature Hybrid for side sleepers.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“The pillowy surface is putting in the work, because as soon as you lie down it responds to hug around you softly … I feel no pressure buildup in the hips and shoulders. It’s really cushy and comfortable.”

Loren Bullock, Former Lead Product Tester

Our Favorite Comfort Layer

Supreme Response Comfort Foam. This foam is indeed supremely bouncy—it reacts instantly to any application or removal of pressure. At the same time, it’s soft and soothing around the joints.

What Else Is Inside the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid?

At 12.25 inches tall, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid has five total layers. The mattress construction varies slightly depending on whether you choose a Soft, Medium, or Firm model.

    • Layer 1 – Quilted Top. The quilted top provides cushioning without preserving divots or indentations.

    • Layer 2 – Supreme Response Comfort Foam. An elastic foam that bounces back quickly in response to your movements.

    • Layer 3 – VariFlex™ Transition Foam. This foam layer ensures you don’t sink too far into the mattress, acting as a buffer between the comfort layers above it and the coils beneath it.

    • Layer 4 – Ascension® Coils. These springs react individually to limit motion transfer while keeping you lifted.

    • Layer 5 – Flex Base. A flexible foundation for support.

Pros
Cushy yet bouncy – This bed has a delightful mix of springiness and cushion.
Stays pretty cool – With a 4.5 out of 5 score in cooling, it’s good for hot sleepers, too.
Cons
Bad at motion isolation – We could feel even small movements across this bed.
Weaker edges – Lying at the side is fine, but sitting really makes you feel like you might fall off.

Customer Reviews of the Signature Hybrid

On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Brooklyn Signature has 4.7 out of 5 stars.

On Reddit, the consensus is that this mattress runs soft, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Per u/rico_inferno, “I was a little worried about getting the firm over the medium because I prefer sleeping on my side, but it is a bit softer than a traditional firm I feel. It is perfect. Back pain has gone away, I am feeling more rested, and every time I lay on it I am so happy with the purchase.”

Another note from u/Eudaimonia-6 confirmed that the mattress’s edge support is lacking. “The edge support is not great. I’ve seen worse. But it is definitely their biggest weakness.”

Why It Earned Most Comfortable Mattress for Heavy People

As you’ve probably figured out, there’s no one-size-fits-all mattress, especially when it comes to comfortability. If you’re a plus-sized shopper who’s struggled to find a comfortable mattress, we may have found your match in the Titan Plus.

Our heavyweight testers praised this bed for its even support, alongside its ability to relieve pressure when lying on their back or side. It’s got strong edges, too, and earned an impressive 5 out of 5 in our cooling test. Overall, it’s a well-rounded bed for any heavy folks looking for a comfy night’s sleep tailored to their needs.

Titan Plus heavy back sleeper test
Our heavyweight tester on the Titan Plus.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“Bottom line: for all plus-size sleepers, there should be plenty of support and pressure relief regardless of your sleeping position.”

Spencer Bland, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Our Favorite Comfort Layer

TitanFlex™ Foam. This proprietary foam seems to do it all. Brooklyn Bedding touts it as great for contouring and pressure relief, while also giving the bed some extra bounce. We definitely noticed the benefits of all three during testing.

What Else Is Inside the Titan Plus?

The Titan Plus has four layers in its 11-inch construction. For an additional upcharge, you can have a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover placed on top.

    • Layer 1 – Quilted Gel Memory Foam (1 inch). Quilted memory foam provides cushioning while an infusion of gel keeps it cool.

    • Layer 2 – TitanFlex™ Foam (2 inches). This foam contours to your body to provide pressure relief, but also responds quickly to movement.

    • Layer 3 – Coil Unit (6 inches). These coils are individually pocketed for better motion isolation and targeted support.

    • Layer 4 – High-Density Foam Base (2 inches). A dense foam foundation supports the mattress from the bottom.

Pros
Strong support – The coils are sturdy enough to bear a larger weight capacity than most beds, so there shouldn’t be any uncomfortable sagging.
Admirable motion isolation – We noticed that with how bouncy this bed is, it contains motion well.
Cons
Feels firm for lighter folks – This bed can feel pretty firm for some average- and lightweight sleepers, especially if they sleep on their side.
Not very cradling – There’s soft foams on top for some cushioning, but it won’t rival memory foam.

Customer Reviews of the Titan Plus

Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars out of over 2,500 reviews.

Discussing the bed on the r/Mattress subreddit, one user (u/Spectt69) reported, “I have no complaints. It is the best mattress I have ever had, probably because it is my first “plus size” mattress.”

However, another user (u/Same_Relation_2798) found they didn’t feel supported and instead felt out of alignment, saying “no matter what position I slept in, I’d feel like a banana.”

Why It Earned Most Comfortable Latex Mattress

Latex foam has a lot going for it as a mattress material: it’s cooling, bouncy, and derived from a natural source (the sap of rubber trees). Not everyone loves its springy feel, but my fellow testers and I were big fans of how it simultaneously relieved pressure and aligned our spines.

Paired with a coil unit, the latex in this bed is especially responsive. I enjoyed it in all three sleeping positions, which is rare!

Birch Natural mattress in the Sleep Advisor studio
The Birch Natural, prepped for testing.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“Very soft feeling around my midsection, where most of my weight is concentrated. It’s what I love most about latex mattresses—it’s great at contouring around the body, but dense enough that you’re still held up and supported, not overly sinking like what you can often see with memory foam. Weight distribution and spine alignment, awesome.”

Julia Forbes, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Our Favorite Comfort Layer

Talalay Latex. Underneath organic cotton and wool, the latex layer is the star of this bed. It has a squishy yet springy feel, so you sink a little but, but not too much. It’s easy on the joints even as it bounces back fast.

What Else Is Inside the Birch Natural?

The Birch Natural is 11 inches thick with six layers.

    • Layer 1 – Organic Cotton Cover. GOTS-certified organic cotton keeps the mattress surface dry and feels soft.

    • Layer 2 – Organic Wool. This first layer of wool acts as a natural fire retardant.

    • Layer 3 – Organic Wool. A second layer of wool adds insulation while providing extra cushion.

    • Layer 4 – Natural Talalay Latex. This springy, hypoallergenic latex layer relieves pressure and bounces back easily when you move around.

    • Layer 5 – Coils. These coils are pocketed to respond individually to movements and applied weight. The longer edges are reinforced to prevent sagging

    • Layer 6 – Organic Wool. A final layer of wool acts as a foundation and fire barrier.

Pros
Lots of bounce – Combo sleepers should be able to switch positions easily.
Naturally cooling – Latex is far better at warding off heat than synthetic foams.
Cons
Doesn’t absorb movement – The lack of motion isolation might make some sensitive sleepers wary.
Latex isn’t for everyone – It’s a material with a unique feel, and you might prefer classic foams.

Customer Reviews of the Birch

According to Birch’s website, the Birch Natural scores a 4.6 out of 5 stars.

On Reddit, users often waffle between organic mattresses such as Birch and Avocado. “The Birch is known to be quite firm,” said u/magichanical, and some users recommend adding a topper to the mattress for more softness.

How to Choose the Most Comfortable Mattress for You

Comfort is, of course, subjective. A mattress that feels super comfortable to you may feel not-so-great to another person with different preferences.

That being said, there are some baseline requirements a mattress has to meet before we can call it truly comfortable and high-quality. Follow the steps below to help define what comfort means for you and narrow the search for your perfect bed.

Balance Support and Pressure Relief

A comfortable mattress will carefully balance support and pressure relief. Support refers to how well the bed lifts you up and holds your spine in a neutral, aligned position. Without support, you may sink into the bed unevenly, and your spine won’t appreciate curving out of its natural shape.

Pressure relief is just what it sounds like — a mattress’s ability to relieve pressure. When you lie down on a bed, certain parts of your body will press into the surface with more force. (Side sleepers, for example, exert the most pressure on their hips and shoulders.) These “pressure points” can become strained or sore if the mattress doesn’t absorb some of that force.

You don’t always need to have support and pressure relief in exactly equal amounts. The ratio you’re looking for is one that has a good amount of both aspects, and perhaps privileges the one that’s most important to you.

If you’re a side sleeper with sensitive hips, for example, you may want to prioritize pressure relief over support. But if you’re a back or stomach sleeper, support will probably be paramount.

Find Your Ideal Firmness

Firmness describes the “feel” of the mattress when you lie on top of it. Is it as hard as a rock, or cloud-like and soft?

Mattress firmness is distinct from support or pressure relief — a firm mattress can have great pressure relief, and a soft mattress can have sturdy support.

At Sleep Advisor, we give each mattress a firmness rating on a scale from 1 to 10, which runs softest to hardest. For most people, a medium-firm mattress (about a 5 to a 6.5 on our scale) will feel the most comfortable and versatile.

To find the right mattress firmness for you, you’ll have to consider a couple factors.

Sleeping Position

Our testers test each sleeping position to make sure each mattress fits the right sleeper
  • Side sleepers are most comfortable on softer mattresses (4 to 4.5 on our scale) that really cushion their hips and shoulders.
  • Back sleepers are most comfortable on medium-firm mattresses (5 to 6.5 on our scale) that “lift” the body but preserve some plushness.
  • Stomach sleepers are most comfortable on firmer mattresses (7 to 8 on our scale) that keep their hips and lower back from sinking too low.
  • Combination sleepers who shift between different positions will be best served by the adaptability of a medium-firm mattress.

Body Type

  • Lightweight sleepers (up to 130 pounds) tend to like softer beds and feel more sensitive to firm surfaces.
  • Average-weight sleepers (130 to 230 pounds) are flexible, and seem to feel comfortable on most medium-firm beds.
  • Heavyweight sleepers (230 pounds or more) are most likely to feel comfortable on firmer beds that won’t sag unevenly.

Identify Your Top Sleep Priorities

Once you’ve nailed down your desired levels of support, pressure relief, and firmness, you need to consider what other mattress elements are most important to you.

We test beds across a wide variety of performance factors, and usually, a bed that astounds us in one category won’t be the best at another. Take a look at the factors below and ask yourself which are essential to your nightly comfort.

Cooling

A bed that prioritizes cooling in its construction can help you (and anyone in bed with you) stay cool and comfy. Extra-hot sleepers should avoid all-foam beds, which tend to retain heat, and look for advanced cooling features such as phase change material and breathable covers. The comfort foams may also have infusions of gel or copper to help them cool down.

Motion Isolation

A mattress with good motion isolation will absorb the feeling of movement so that you aren’t jostled awake by a fidgeting partner. Foam mattresses are the best at this, but some hybrids manage to have decent motion isolation due to the foam layers up top.

Bounce

Bouncy beds can be great for combination sleepers who move around a lot at night. Rather than swaddling you in slow-sinking layers, a springy bed will help you readjust. Bounce (or responsiveness) is also beneficial for sexually active couples for the same reason.

Edge Support

A mattress with strong edge support will enable you to get in and out bed easily, without too much buckling or dipping at the sides. Edge support is therefore important for elderly people or sleepers with mobility issues. If you tend to sleep at the very edge of your bed, sturdy edges are also a must.

What Type of Mattress is Most Comfortable?

Hybrid and memory foam mattresses can both be exceptionally comfortable. We recommend hybrid beds most often because they have supportive spring units in addition to pressure-relieving foams. They’re also extremely varied, so you can probably find one that matches your preferences.

Latex mattresses may be hybrid or all-foam models, but it’s important to note that latex has a pretty singular feel. It’s soft, but much more springy than the poly foams you might be used to. Some people love it; others prefer a less reactive foam.

Traditional innerspring mattresses are probably the least comfortable option. Because they only have a thin comfort layer above their coils, they’re known for being tough on pressure points and sagging over time.

How to Make a Mattress More Comfortable

Add a Mattress Topper

Mattress toppers can dramatically change the feel of your mattress, and they’re much more affordable than a brand-new bed.

There are firm mattress toppers for folks who want a flatter surface, and softer ones if you’re craving more cushion. Many of them, such as the Gel Swirl Memory Foam mattress topper, come in different thicknesses for even more customization.

Additionally, you can purchase a cooling topper if you run hot at night. The Graphite Memory Foam topper from Saatva, for example, regulates temperature with an infusion of graphite.

There are even latex mattress toppers for people who prefer more natural materials. The PlushBeds Organic Latex Mattress Topper is one of the most eco-friendly toppers around.

Try the Other Side (If It’s Flippable)

A flippable mattress offers you two different firmness options in one bed. One side will be noticeably softer than the other, so you can flip it over when you’d like a change in feel.

Invest in a Better Pillow

Your pillow plays a big role in your comfort while you’re trying to sleep. If it’s too lofty or too flat, your neck might misaligned with the rest of your spine when you rest your head on it. Try to find a pillow that maintains the natural curve of your upper spine. Cooling pillows can also be a balm for hot sleepers.

Break In the Mattress Over Time

In some cases, a new mattress might not feel right because it needs more time to “break in.” Give it a few days to fully expand (if it came in a box). Then, see if you notice it soften up over a month or so of sleeping on it.  Some manufacturers suggest trying the bed for at least 90 days to achieve this effect.

Most Comfortable Mattress FAQs

Why is it important to have a comfortable mattress?

Feeling comfortable on your mattress makes it more likely that you’ll go to sleep quickly and get the kind of rest your body needs. A bed that feels too hard, too soft, or too uneven will definitely diminish the quality of your sleep.

Additionally, if you have any health conditions that impact your comfort or mobility, a cozy mattress can make a big difference in your experience of symptoms during the night. The wrong mattress, on the other hand, may make your symptoms worse.

Are soft mattresses more comfortable than firm ones?

Not necessarily. The most comfortable mattress for you will depend on your primary sleeping position, or body type, and other factors.

If you’re a lightweight side sleeper, for example, then a soft bed is ideal. If you’re a heavier back or stomach sleeper, though, a firmer mattress will probably feel more comfortable than a plush one.
